Gwernaffield – Sustainability

The Bromfield application is not correct in describing Gwernaffield as ‘highly sustainable

The Bromfield application says: ‘Gwernaffield offers a wide range of services and community facilities, in addition to the range of employment opportunities available locally.’ It refers throughout  to Gwernaffield as being ‘highly sustainable’.

Actually : Gwernaffield has few services, few community facilities and few employment opportunities.

The Flintshire Unitary Development Plan (UDP) 2000-2015 classified Gwernaffield  as Category C – small villages  ‘The small villages category includes the smallest settlements which generally have poor accessibility to public transport, poor facilities and many are constrained by environmental designations’

The Flintshire CC’s Settlement Service Audit concluded ‘The service provision within the village has been mapped for illustrative purposes… As the image suggests Gwernaffield has few services.’

The Flintshire LDP ‘Key Messages’ (August 2016) tabulated the Bandings of Settlements – where Band 1 was the most Sustainable and Band 10 was the least Sustainable. Gwernaffield was in the Band 7 Grouping – nearer the ‘least provisioned  settlements in the County’. The same document showed Gwernaffield as only having a Primary School and Public House as ‘Settlement Services’.
